FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WORLD BUILDING.

What is El Nysa?
El Nysa is a small planet that orbits a red dwarf sun in a galaxy beyond the reach of the "Storm." There is only one known continent on its surface, and it's called The Nysa Isles, which locals (Nysans) refer as either Nysa or the Isles. Beyond its shores is a deadly fog which has prevented the natives from exploring further; those who have tried never returned. For this, they have a belief that their Gods have blessed their lands. The fog is to ward off evil from reaching their shores.

Two moons orbit El Nysa: one is similar to what we have on Earth, Alria; the other is actually the Natha Orbiters' station, Thesa, which is tidally and orbitally locked to El Nysa. The natives often refer to Thesa as The Eye and worship it, as their moon is always watching.

For more information about El Nysa lore, please refer to the World Information page.
What is the Storm?
The storm is a mysterious, unavoidable phenomenon that engulfs worlds in darkness. There is no real explanation for it. Once cloaked in it, the world will wither and die. The Natha Orbiters have seen this happen countless times throughout their existence and have decided to collect species from various universes.
What about my loved ones?
The Natha Orbiters are not heartless beings. About half of the giant space station is dedicated to storage, and half of that comprises of a huge library filled with pods. Your loved (and perhaps not-so loved) ones have also been rescued. The Orbiters will assert that those who have not yet awoken are not healthy enough to be released from the pods, but perhaps in time, they will be able to join you. They do not provide any guarantees, for The Storm is capable of inflicting some nasty neurological damage, but they are trying their best.
How did I get here?
Once your world is swallowed by the Storm, the Natha will have come to collect you. You'll fall into deep sleep for an unspecified amount of time — during this, your mind will be prepped for the information that the Natha will supply you: what happened to your world, where you are, and what they want you to do. You'll dream of the Natha explaining all of this to you and wish for your cooperation.

When you wake, you'll be at Thesa Station, also known as one of El Nysa's artificial moons. You'll stay at the station until you are ready to start your new life in El Nysa, where you'll blend in with the natives.
What types of transportation will my character have access to?
Transportation options such as land mounts, sky mounts, boats, and vehicles will be available for purchase through AC rewards. In addition, all characters gain the ability to teleport to and from El Nysa and the Natha Station instantly, but they must take care not to do so in front of a native. Characters can currently teleport to the Station and back once per day.
What about money?
AC rewards (explained as monthly allowances from the Orbiters) would be one way for your character to get money. The economy is flourishing in El Nysa, and characters will have many opportunities to work for others, as well as start their own businesses.

Here, their currency is called silver.
What type of technology is available on El Nysa? What about in the Natha Orbiters’ station?
Technology on El Nysa is fairly rudimentary, but not totally medieval. Think somewhere between steam and cyberpunk. Mobile phones are powered by magic, but electricity and steam-powered machinery does exist. The Natha have not allowed technology to advance far enough to enable Nysans to venture into space, but they do enjoy conveniences such as television (also powered by a magical network), household appliances, and steam-powered automobiles (available as AC rewards).

In the Orbiters’ space station, however, technology is extremely advanced. Characters will have access to computers and Internet (although there is nothing to be found on the Natha Orbiters or El Nysa). Characters with training in piloting mobile suits will have access to such machinery, although it will take a bit of earning the Natha’s trust (REP gains) to gain such access.
Is there a language barrier?
No. As El Nysa is a melting pot of various species, the Natha have ensured that everyone speaks a single language. Even if they try speaking in their native languages, their words and text will be auto-translated to the universal Nysan language. However, it is possible to mix in a little bit of their native languages. For example, if your character speaks English with Spanish as their native (and natural) tongue, they'll speak mostly in the universal Nysan language, but still able to blurt their native languages.
My character wouldn’t cooperate with the Orbiters’ requests.
They can send you back to the darkness of your world. The Orbiters can be very convincing and will provide the necessary incentives in order to get your character convinced this is their best way forward, but they won't try to bend over backwards in order to make this happen.

If your character is too difficult or you can't rationalize why they would go along with this, then perhaps the character is not fit for this setting. You are more than welcome to ask us how we can work this out for you and your character.
What’s this about civil unrest and factions all about?
El Nysa had been forged out interspecies love and tolerance, thus its people have long been blessed with peace. In recent years, as the population grows, many natives are starting to develop ideals that conflict the mainland.

At the moment, there are two main factions: The Olympian Empire — the imperialist faction which your character will start off — and The Wyvers, which lies on the southern border of the mainland. Over the course of the game, as your character's reputation grows, you will have the option to either stay neutral or join one of the factions. Additional factions will be introduced further into the game's plot, and PCs will also have opportunities to create their own factions.
What kinds of things will my character have the opportunity to be involved in in El Nysa?
As we are a build-your-own-adventure game, there are various things you can do. You can help the Nysan economy by building your own business. You can take on various jobs, gain your reputation, and get recruited by a faction to involve yourself in war. Perhaps you were once a pilot; there are always threats that lurk beyond El Nysa's solar system that could use mobile suit pilots. There are still unexplored territory in their land that adventurers can chart out.

The game has endless possibilities, and we welcome players to be as creative with the environment as they please.
Where will my character be staying?
Characters that arrive in Olympia will often come by the shores of the mainland of Nysa Isles, where they will become residents of the Olympian Empire. They will all start out at the starter dormitories of the residential district with randomized roommates. While nothing special, starter housing is subsidized the first month and affordable afterwards.

Characters that arrive in Wyver are often expected to start in the Old City slums, which vary in quality from bad to worse. It's free to stay there with whoever else randomly ends up living in the same vicinity, but characters can buy amenities and eventually move to proper residential areas as well.

From there, they will be able to gain access to better living quarters when they have acquired enough reputation and money. Not to mention that the faction leaders will offer luxurious living for the people they wish to recruit as an incentive to join them. Please see this link for more information on starter housing.
What sort of "fashion" is typical for El Nysa? On Thesa Station, will there be extra clothes accessible to them or do they only have the clothes on their person?
Olympia's style is something along the lines of neutral "modern fantasy". They will wear whatever is comfortable for them, but the Nobles tend to prefer robes and accessories. Wyver is a little different; because it's considered a jungle, people tend to wear less clothes.

Characters don't exactly need to wear the same styles in order to fit in; at most, they'll get strange looks akin to people walking around in cosplay. Natives will just assume that your characters are immigrants.

As for Thesa Station, you can assume that the Orbiters had observed and assured that you have plenty to copies of clothes that are typical to your character in their canon.

GAME MECHANICS.

My character has a disability/missing limb/other physical impairment. How will this be handled in-game?
This is up to the player. They can arrive with their physical impairment, whatever it may be, and have the ailment cured or repaired as a gift from the Natha for heeding to their requests. You can also choose to have this be a reward for later in the game if you want to use it as a mechanic.
What are the communities/journals for? Are there tags we must use?
  • [community profile] elnysa is the game-wide network: for text/video/voice posts. There is no way of making "accidental" posts.
  • [community profile] nysalogs is the logs community: for all your face-to-face interactions and logs.
  • [community profile] nysaooc is the OOC community: for introductions, game-related announcements, etc.
  • [community profile] nysaisles is the maps collective: for all cartography-related writeups (mod use only).
  • [community profile] elnyan is the meme community: test drives, memes, etc.
  • [personal profile] natha & [personal profile] nysan are the mod and NPC journals, respectively.
The format of your tags should be as follows: umbrella series name: character name. For example, Sam Wilson from Marvel Cinematic Universe will become mcu: sam wilson. For characters that are more commonly referred to as their aliases, please put their alias in parenthesis after their given names. For example, Widowmaker from Overwatch will be: overwatch: amélie lacroix (widowmaker).
Is it possible for my character to post anonymously on the network? Are the devices hackable? May characters create apps?
Posting anonymously on the network is fine, and characters do have the ability to change their usernames. It may leave a paper/digital trail on the devices. The technology is notably alien, so devices may not initially be hackable, but with time, the Natha believe the people would be able to. It should be noted that nothing on Thesa will ever be hackable, whereas the mobile devices that they received are intended to be as technologically "average" throughout all worlds, so tech savvy characters will be able to fiddle around with that a little.

While there is no internet or search engine currently, tech-savvy characters may create their own websites and apps.
How does time flow?
The game flows in real time on a 1 IC day to 1 OOC day ratio. To keep things simple, the calendar in-game is the same as our own.
Tell me about AC rewards.
We award players for activity. When turning in your activity, you will be given AC points (ACP) based on the comment count. The points vary depending on the nature of the activity: be it a network post, a log post, log comments, or text comments — all of these will count differently.

In-game, the ACP will be seen as a "monthly allowance" given by the Orbiters for their involvement with the Nysan people. It will be converted into currency and can be used to various items at the markets. They can also be used to regain large items from their homeworld.

For more information, please refer to the AC Rewards/Reputation page.
What if my character tries to leave (for example, if they get access to a mobile suit)?
The Natha entrust you with mobile suits (or other vehicles) with the confidence that you will work by their side. Should you violate that trust, your mode of escape will be disabled, and you will be stranded in the depths of space until you've learned your lesson. Your Natha Orbiter REP will also reset to zero. Contact a moderator if your character will be attempting this.
What is the reputation system?
The natives will have various quests and job opportunities for your character to sign up for. It can be as simple as helping with shipment to something more hands on, like fighting off monsters that are terrorizing their property. Once completed, you'll gain reputation.

Methodically speaking: every month, we will have a list of job and quests that players can sign their characters up. You'll be required to thread it out with another character. The thread will require five (5) comments from each player, ten (10) total, for it to count as complete. You'll comment back on the sign-up page with the link to your thread, and you'll rewarded reputation points based on the job.

While reputation points aren't required for AC, it is necessary for special privileges and access to special items in-game, including recruitment to the army. Please take note that if you max out REP pertaining to a faction that has an opposing faction (for example, if you max out Olympia REP), your previous gained REP for the opposing faction (Wyver) will be wiped to zero. The Wyvers wouldn’t take too kindly to someone who’s done so much for their enemy, after all!
Why is this game 18+?
While El Nysa is not a sex game, there will be smut and graphic violence options available for players who would like to opt-in to play such things. Therefore, all players must be of legal age (18+) to join. The people of El Nysa come from many different cultural backgrounds, but there is one thing they all have in common: they are all very sex-friendly, and embracing this cultural aspect will help your character assimilate into their ranks.

With that being said, smut is NOT required to play in the game or achieve higher ranks/rewards, and it will NOT be a focus of events/mingles. Players are required to be respectful of each others’ gameplay: no kinkshaming or shippushing will be tolerated.
Okay, so can my character get pregnant?
No. The Natha Orbiters have many people they wish to save, and only one planet for them to live in. Therefore, characters are rendered sterile upon arrival.
What is AC like?
AC would be two (2) proofs of any of the following:
  • A log thread with at least five (5) comments coming from your character.
  • A network thread with at least ten (10) comments coming from your character.
All proofs must include threads with separate characters (example: If you used a thread with Character A for your first proof, you may not use a thread with the same character for your second proof).

If you cannot make AC in a given month, players are allowed to take a strike. Players are allowed one strike before they must make full AC or be removed from the game.

Players are only allowed to use a hiatus exemption from AC once every three months. If a player has extenuating circumstances and needs to hiatus for longer than a month, feel free to contact a mod. If a player is unable to contact a mod, a friend is allowed to reach out to the team on their behalf, as long as the player in question confirms the situation later on.

Players that do not respond to AC will be swept from the game, and as application rounds will typically fall right after AC, in the interest of fairness we will not allow idled characters to app back for one round.
How will my character communicate while in El Nysa?
Characters are provided with a mobile phone upon their arrival. This phone is capable of transmitting text, video, and audio. Although characters may contact native NPCs on their phone, the Natha Orbiters network ([community profile] elnysa) is only accessible by PCs and Orbiters. Private messages to ic inboxes are only seen by the characters involved. Provided all players are in agreement, it is possible for hacker characters to hack into someone’s private messages, but again, ALL players must consent.
How the heck would my non-humanoid/catgirl/mermaid/plant-person be able to blend in with the natives?
Characters are fortunate in the sense that there are many different races and creatures on El Nysa. With so many different islands comprising the continent, it’s impossible to keep track! Therefore, Nysans will not bat an eye at someone with an unusual appearance. It’s likely they’ll assume your character comes from one of the Olympian colonies.
What about powers?
Special powers, abilities, and magic are welcome EXCEPT for resurrection, as this is a power that must be regained via AC rewards. Natives are learned in magic, so it won't come as a surprise to them to see powers being used for convenience. That said, anything game-breaking will be nerfed at mods' discretion. Players are also free to nerf their own characters' abilities if they so desire.

Buildings can be destroyed, but the characters involved will be jailed swiftly and effectively.
What happens if my character tells a native about the Orbiters?
How would you feel if someone told you that the moon was actually an alien space station and that they worked for these aliens? Well, that’s kinda how a Nysan would react to being told such things, too.

Don’t forget that the Natha are always watching. The first time a character does this or actively refuses to cooperate, they will receive a stern warning. If your character continues being difficult, they will suffer consequences, which may include:
  • Delays in medical care for their sleeping loved ones
  • Incarceration
  • Removal of certain reputation gains/items
  • In extreme cases, execution
How is death handled?
With so many dangers, both on El Nysa and space, it’s logical that death is always a possibility. The Natha Orbiters are determined to keep as many people alive as possible, but their power is a limited resource. Thus, they will only revive a character who dies in-game once. The character will need to recover in a medical pod for a minimum of 3 days before awakening. Whether they are fully healed or retain injuries is up to the player’s discretion. There are items, however, such as revival beads and phoenix downs, that are capable of instantly reviving characters with various degrees of sustained injuries. These items will be available as AC rewards.

If a character is killed and no revival is initiated, they must be dropped, and that player can no longer re-app that character to the game. The Orbiters will retrieve the body (or reconstruct the body) and return them to their medical pod. Other players may re-app that character.
Is there anything my character will experience in death?
Your characters will briefly wake in what only can be described as the Eye of the Storm. Suspended in space, they will see stars burn out and pieces of collapsed worlds break apart until they're nothing but dust. Their essence will feel stretched, as if being pulled apart to follow that fate, and a distant roar of thousands of voices will call for them upon their resistance. This experience will last until it becomes near unbearable, until they begin to hear the voices of the Natha and become conscious in their restored body.
What about dropped characters?
Although the Natha Orbiters are doing everything in their power to keep their beloved planet from being hit by The Storm, this is a phenomenon even they cannot fully understand. There are times in which remnants of The Storm’s influence are able to pierce through the atmosphere and severely incapacitate characters. This can happen to anyone, at any time, for no particular reason, and without affecting anyone else around them. When this happens, the Orbiters are quick to transport the character back into their pod library for care, retrieving them before anyone even notices something’s wrong.

If a character is re-apped at a later time by the same player, that player has the option to keep or lose their previous in-game memories. Characters re-apped by a new player will awaken with no previous memories.

Please note that once a character is dropped, their banked ACP/REP is lost, and cannot be regained even if the character is re-apped into the game.
Is there a wait time to re-app?
Characters that were dropped may be re-apped in the following application round. For characters that idled out, players must wait one app cycle before re-apping to the game.
How do hiatuses and canon updates work?
If a player needs to go on hiatus, they have the option of leaving their character on auto-pilot or temporarily put to sleep in a pod to recover from a minor illness. The maximum length of a hiatus is one month. For information on canon updates, follow this link.

APPLICATIONS.

What characters are appable to El Nysa?
Players may app any canon character aged 16+ to El Nysa. OCs, fandom/MMO OCs, non-canon AU/CRAU versions, and duplicates are not allowed. Canon AUs (such as DC multiverse) are accepted on a case-by-case basis, provided there is enough canon to produce a fleshed-out personality. Multiples of the same character (for example, Hijikata from Gintama and Hakuouki) are allowed, as are silent protagonists.

Non-humanoid characters may also be apped. For characters that would be substantially hindered otherwise (e.g. a ghost with no tangible form, a talking car, etc.), players have the option of receiving a humanoid form from the Orbiters. Otherwise, they will retain their original bodies.

There is no specific restriction on the amount of canon a character must have in order to be appable. Apps are judged case-by-case. If you would like clarification, feel free to ask.
Can I app from a newly released canon?
Canons must be at least one month old before characters can be apped to El Nysa, and we ask that players RPing from new canons provide an opt-out post in their journal for anyone trying to avoid spoilers. Canons do not need to be translated into English to be eligible.
Are there any game/canon/character caps?
There is a franchise cap of 15 characters. (Franchise cap meaning that series like Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X, or Marvel Cinematic Universe/Netflix and Marvel's Inhumans contribute to the same cap.) A list of franchises that are at or close to the cap will be available on the application page.

There is also a character cap of three characters per player. For every app cycle, a player may app one character at a time.

Finally, while there is no game cap, we do have an application cap of 60 applications per round.
What can my character arrive with?
They will arrive whatever they have on their person when the Storm hit them, barring weapons and magical or more-than-modern-technology artifacts. Regardless of how many they would be carrying, characters will come in with either 1 weapon or 1 magical/technological artifact. Dual weapons count as one weapon. Other weapons or artifacts may be regained through AC Rewards. Larger possessions, such as mobile suits, vehicles, and large pets will be held in quarantine by the Natha until they believe the character can be trusted. These can also be regained from AC points.
Anything else?
Ask in the comments below and we'll get to you as soon as we can!

Not for me but could help others!

1. For a disability like Professor X needing his wheelchair or Oswald Cobblepot from Gotham needing his umbrella/cane how would that work?

2. For large comic worlds like Marvel would the MCU side be seen as its own verse? (including Netflix!Marvel along with the movies/Agent Carter/AoS)

3. Would a minor player like the character Maisie Williams played on DW this past season or Kristen Kringle from Gotham be allowed?

4. Would characters from video games (i.e The Outsider from Dishonored), books, comics without a TV/movie counterpart, anime and the like need a live PB?

TIA!

obligatory vampire/ghoul/other assorted heterophagous entities question: if your character requires blood/human flesh/what have you to survive, would that be provided, either in the form of donation (slightly more likely for vampires, but still) or a synthetic counterpart? if there's a synthetic option, does it taste okay, or would it be the equivalent of vitamin slurry for humans — nutritious but certainly not delicious?

for characters with mind control abilities, would the natives be susceptible? what about other characters (given player approval, of course)?

Would it be possible to app an android into the game? 9S has only been in production for ~3 years but he was built to help in an ongoing war. There's no specific age that he was designed to mimic, but graphic violence is a constant in his life. Would he be mature enough to be allowed?

By some ridiculous twist of fate, more than one character I'm thinking about apping has powers but technically receives them from a source outside themself. (Think a pet or a tiny floating robot companion.) Am I right to assume they'd arrive sans powers, but be able to recover their little friend/powers later with points?

Heyo- characters of an age who aged up during canon to be 16, are they allowed? (Specifically referring here to Kingdom Hearts characters- Sora [and by extension Roxas and Xion) was 14 during the original game but is 16 as of the most recent game, and some games get a little iffy about that.)

Hello! I just have a quick question (and I apologize if this has already been asked -- I'm currently on my phone).

Would it be possible to app a character from the first book early on in this game, and then canon update them to the last book later on?

Hello! I have a couple questions, sorry. First, I know non-humans are okay, but what about characters of very small size? If I apped, for example, a fairy, would I need to make her human-sized? If I did make her human-sized, would she retain her wings?

Second, Tink isn't a human, and formed fully grown as an adult fairy. Would she still be considered appropriate for the game?

Last one: while she has wings, Tink can't fly without the use of fairy dust, which comes from a source on her world. Would it be okay to app her with one bag (about a thimble full) of dust as her magical artifact, and would she ever have an opportunity to receive more later?

Thank you!

hi there - quick question re: appable characters!

i'm interested in playing mcu bucky as fully brought up to his most recent canon point, and my friend is interested in playing him as 40s era only (pre-winter soldier). some games would consider both versions of the character appable, and some wouldn't. what is your stance?

In regards to the large pets! Would the character be aware that the pet is being taken care of? Can they easily ask about the pet's condition just to make sure they're alright until they can have them back? Are visitations allowed?

hey there mods!

1. will there be app/reserve challenges?

Hello!

1. There will be no app/reserve challenges. This app cycle is going to be a little different from the following ones because we've extended it. Here's the basic rundown of how it's going to happen:

If Person A reserves John Doe on Mon, June 26th at 12:01AM EST, Persona A will have until SAT, July 1st @ 11:59PM EST submit John Doe's app, after which all reserves will expire without exception. If Person A fails to submit their app before SUN, July 2nd 12:00AM EST, John Doe will be available to be apped on a first-come, first-serve basis.

We will be be keeping the reserves page up-to-date with submitted apps. Hope that clears things up a little!

2. That is accurate, yes! When it comes to TDMs, we will be a little late or early here and there, but we will never be late with reserves and apps without advanced notice. We recommend following our Plurk for updates.

In regard to your statement about PBs, I was hoping I could get some more clarification. My character has very little screen time in the second season of his canon (so much smaller range of emotion for icons) and playing him with S1 icons wouldn't quite work because he's much younger in S1. Would a PB be applicable in this circumstance as a supplement for canon icons? Thanks!

What about characters that are traveling space? How will this work in regards to the Storm swallowing their world?

Can you play a character post-death? Or only take them from the moment before they died or earlier?

Hello!

Out of curiosity, will there be opportunities for non-combat-inclined characters to affect the plot and game, or do you think it will be primarily combat focused?

Sort of relatedly... under reputation rewards, would "any special request" maybe encompass some sort of way for a character's musical abilities to have an affect on allies? Like increasing their capabilities and the like... vaguely like the Macross franchise et al!

Hey there! Would Pokemon fall under the "large pets" rule in that they would all need to be regained, or can one be kept upon arrival as a "weapon", since they can use attacks?

hello i have an application question!

on the app for the power section, it mentions keeping things in a concise list format. however what about powers that have language very specific to the canon? would you prefer we explain that canon-specific language for the sake of explaining the power, or would a wiki link suffice?

Hi there!

Because people can be taken from different times from different universes, is it possible to see a character that is dead in canon in the stasis unit?

Apologies if this is written somewhere! What sort of "fashion" is typical for El Nysa? Would characters be expected to wear these clothes to fit in? Would wearing their own clothes be considered too strange to the natives?

On Thesa Station, will there be extra clothes accessible to them or do they only have the clothes on their person?
